CRANBERRY TWP — The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex has been open for more than six months and now plans are moving forward for restaurants and other developments on the property.
The township supervisors saw a presentation Thursday for projects in the next phase of development of Cranberry Springs.
The developer, Sippel Enterprises of Sewickley, is proposing three new buildings on two parcels.
One would be a 6,500 square-foot Firebirds Wood Fired Grill restaurant, and the other an unspecified restaurant in a 7,500 square-foot building with a shared parking lot with 300 spaces, said engineer Jim Venture of PVE Sheffler.
An 18,000 square-foot building also is proposed that would include a bakery with a drive-through, office space, a restaurant and two retail outlets.
Firebirds is described as a “polished casual” restaurant chain based in Charlotte, N.C.
It is known for its steak, seafood and large wine selection, said Joseph Daniels, the company’s director of real estate.
It has 38 locations in 14 states, but none are in Western Pennsylvania.
These proposals are part of the first phase of development of the land, which is 90 acres adjacent to Interstate 79 and accessible from Cranberry Springs Drive.
The master plan calls for four restaurants to be built.
A Marriott Towneplace Suites hotel already is under construction on the property.

November 3, 2017 – AEI Supervisor Retires
Jim Rufer handed over the reins Friday, October 13th as he begins to dig into retirement. Jim has been a mainstay at AEI since 1985. He began as a mechanic in the shop and quickly worked his way up to shop supervisor. He oversaw operations both in the shop and the field. Jim had an infectious, “get it done” attitude that kept his crews focused and motivated. Jim’s commitment and unparalleled work ethic have been essential to AEI’s growth over the past twenty-five years. We will miss Jim and the value he brought to our team, his humorous stories, and the laughs he leaves behind. Best wishes Jim and enjoy retirement, you earned it!

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — With shovels at the end of hockey sticks, Penguins’ owner Mario Lemieux and UPMC’s CEO Jeffrey Romoff joined others to turn dirt Wednesday afternoon for the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township.
“In 2015, the Penguins and UPMC will open this new facility with two sheets of ice, but it will be much more than a hockey rink,” said David Morehouse, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The rinks will also be open for public skating and youth and adult hockey.
UPMC is building the 180,000 square foot facility at a cost of $70 million, and Romoff hailed Lemieux for his special relationship to UPMC.
“We have the Austin Playrooms in seven of our hospitals which Mario and the family foundation have provided, the Lemieux sibling complex at Children’s Hospital, and most recently, our fabulous completely brand new Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers,” noted Romoff.

Cranberry Twp, Penn., July 18, 2013 – Pittsburgh Penguins and UPMC sign letter of intent with AEI owner Gary Sippel to build 180,000-square-foot development facility. Details from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
After working with developer Don Rodgers for nearly a year to build the complex on a 35-acre site on Route 228, they have abandoned the property for another location less than half a mile away but closer to Interstate 79.
Travis Williams, the Penguins’ chief operating officer, said Tuesday the team and UPMC have signed a letter of intent with developer Gary Sippel to build the 180,000-square-foot facility on a parcel adjacent to the interstate. read more →
